HVAC Mechanic

Amentum is looking for an HVAC Mechanic to join our team!

Essential Responsibilities:

The HVAC Mechanic is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems, including chillers, cooling towers, pneumatic systems, and other related equipment. The HVAC Mechanic is expected to have a deep understanding of HVAC system operations, building codes, and safety regulations, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively while meeting high standards for performance and compliance. This role involves ensuring the efficient and safe operation of critical HVAC systems. Primary responsibilities include:

  • HVAC System Installation & Commissioning:
    • Install, repair, and commission HVAC systems and equipment, including chillers, cooling towers, air handling units, heat exchangers, steam systems, and associated ductwork.
    • Plan and execute the installation of new systems according to blueprints, manufacturer specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Troubleshooting & Repairs:
    • Diagnose malfunctions and inefficiencies in large-scale HVAC systems, including refrigeration systems, chillers, cooling towers, pneumatic controls, and steam/condensate systems.
    • Perform repairs or component replacements on electrical and mechanical HVAC systems, such as motors, compressors, valves, fans, and controllers.
    • Use diagnostic equipment, including manifold gauges, multimeters, thermometers, and refrigerant recovery units, to troubleshoot and verify system performance.
  • Chillers & Cooling Towers:
    • Maintain and repair chillers, cooling towers, and associated components, ensuring consistent performance and operational efficiency.
    • Perform service tasks such as descaling, lubrication, fan balancing, water flow adjustments, and pump maintenance to prevent downtime or inefficiencies.
    • Apply technical expertise to ensure proper operation and integration of chiller systems with connected evaporators and condensers.
  • Preventative Maintenance:
    • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on HVAC systems and related equipment, including inspections, cleaning, filter replacement, and lubrication.
    • Monitor refrigerant levels and repair leaks as necessary while complying with EPA standards.
    • Inspect and maintain steam and condensate systems to support HVAC operations.
  • Code Compliance & Safety:
    • Apply extensive knowledge of National and Local Building HVAC codes to ensure all work is performed in compliance with regulations and organizational standards.
    • Follow EPA guidelines for refrigerant handling and demonstrate safe work practices, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) use.
  • Tool & Equipment Operation:
    • Operate and maintain hand and power tools related to HVAC installation and repair, ensuring safety and proper function.
    • Use specialized tools such as brazing kits, refrigerant recovery systems, vacuum pumps, and pressure gauges to complete tasks effectively.
  • Documentation & Reports:
    • Maintain accurate records of repair and maintenance activities, refrigerant usage, and system testing results.
    • Update technical schematics, blueprints, and as-built drawings to reflect system modifications or upgrades.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship:
    • Collaborate with other trades, engineers, contractors, and facility teams to address HVAC-related needs in mission-critical environments.
    • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior technicians or team members for system installations and maintenance best practices.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to:

  • Temperature extremes in both indoor and outdoor environments, including hot mechanical rooms or cold refrigeration systems.
  • Working near energized electrical systems, high-pressure steam systems, and moving mechanical parts.
  • Handling tools, chemicals, and refrigerants that require adherence to safety protocols and PPE requirements.

The position requires:

  • Physical strength and dexterity to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and frequently climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs.
  • Work in confined or elevated spaces, such as air ducts, crawlspaces, or cooling towers.
  • Manual dexterity for operating tools and handling delicate HVAC equipment components.
  • Visual acuity to inspect small components, read diagrams, and analyze system performance metrics.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and stooping during service tasks.

Noise levels can range from moderate to loud, requiring hearing protection in some situations.

Minimum Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • EPA "Universal" CFC Certification (carried on person at all times).
  • Master HVAC license.
  • Thorough knowledge of refrigeration systems, chillers, HVAC, pneumatic controls, steam systems, and condensate systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of hand and power tools required for HVAC service and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with basic mathematical functions needed for HVAC system calculations.
  • In-depth understanding of National and Local Building HVAC codes to ensure compliance.
  • State License or OEM Factory Certification (if applicable).
  • A minimum of five (5) or more years of experience in the HVAC trade, focusing on service and maintenance.
  • At least three (3) years of direct experience maintaining and repairing chillers and cooling towers.

Clearance Required (If Applicable):

  • TS/SCI with Poly

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Years of Experience:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in the HVAC trade in service and maintenance roles.
  • Three (3) years of direct experience maintaining and repairing chillers and cooling towers.

Required Certifications:

  • EPA "Universal" CFC Certification (must be carried on person at all times).
  • Master HVAC license and State License or OEM Factory Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or Technical Certification in HVAC/R or Mechanical Systems.
  • Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and other advanced control platforms.
  • Extensive experience in government, military, or critical infrastructure projects.
  • Advanced certifications such as NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or LEED Accreditation.
  • Specialized training in energy-efficient HVAC systems and renewable energy sources.

Service Contract Act (SCA) Compensation & Benefits:

This is an hourly, overtime-eligible position that falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA). In accordance with the Health and Welfare provisions of the SCA, and in addition to your base hourly rate, you may be eligible to receive an additional health and welfare payment for each hour you work to ensure compliance with the minimums set forth by the act. The amount you are entitled to receive will vary depending upon the fringe benefits you select now and in the future.

Compensation Details:

$50,000 to $100,000
